Papa Will Putting a Crib Together ... and My Weird Belly

This weekend, cute Papa Will put together the crib and dresser-changer for Baby Girl.  Here he is getting started:

And again counting out all the hardware and checking the directions:

And again laying out all the various pieces:

How cute is that?!  Baby Girl will know how much her dad loves her.  And she'll sleep (and be changed on) furniture that her dad built just for her.

... And here's the kind of weird part of the post.  I personally tend to like it when mamas who had their babies before me tell me not only about the sweet/cute parts of pregnancy, but also the -- well -- weird parts as well.  I think it's important to get the whole picture, so that you're not expecting one thing, and getting another.

So along those lines, one of the weirdest / coolest parts has been the baby moving in my belly.  She's getting so big now that I not only feel it, but can sometimes see her moving.  I think that's beyond weird.  Also kind of cool.  But still, weird.  Here's a video where I managed to capture it (sorry for the Google directions in the middle of the video), be prepared for some major similarities to the movie Alien:

Anniversary in St. Louis

+Lauren Uyeshiro and I take turns planning our anniversary celebration. This year, she thought of something she was really proud of. In the weeks leading up to this past weekend, she was bursting at the seams trying to keep the secret. (It's never been her strong suit). All she revealed was that we'd be flying somewhere -- but not too far; and that we'd be spending time outside -- but "more like a park than like a jungle."

Eventually, the morning of July 4th arrived, and after stepping out of the cab at Midway, I finally got to learn our mystery destination: St. Louis.

St. Louis, people!

St. Louis occupies an odd psychic space, for me. Before we moved to the Midwest, I knew that St. Louis had the arch, and that Washington University was there, and that the University of Washington was not there. But that was about it, and the city itself never really came up in conversation. Like, ever.

As with so many things though, the story with St. Louis is different if you're in the Midwest. I would guess that a majority of my Chicago friends and colleagues have family in St. Louis. Many of them grew up there. We talk about the city, its charms, and its BBQ all the time at work. Heck, rooting for the Cardinals is even the baseball-hipster thing to do here in Cubs-dominated north Chicago.

So, having heard so much about the city for years, I was really excited that we were finally making our way down there.

During our time in St. Louis, we visited...

...the crowded, sunny, and beautiful 4th of July fair right under the arch:

[Pro tip: if your wife's politics are anything like Lauren's, do NOT thank her for "taking you to Sarah Palin's 'real America'" on your anniversary.]

...the really impressive Botanical Gardens...

[the "Climatron" was clearly constructed by the Dharma Initiative].

...the science center, where we saw a retired Blue Angels jet and where Lauren finally made good on my 8-year request to go see a laser light show at the Laserium...

...and of course, the City Museum, which was at the top of everyone's must-see list in St. Louis.

We also had fantastic meals, ice creams, coffees, or other assorted stops at Bridge Tap House, Rooster, Shaw's Coffee, Blondie's, Gelateria Tavolini, and the Schlafly Tap Room. Fancy anniversary dinner was at Charlie Gitto's on the Hill.

Assorted memories for us to hopefully chuckle about in our old age:
  • Lauren's craving for a turkey leg leading to 30 minutes of patient queueing, only to see the person immediately in front of us purchase the last 6 turkey legs at the fair.
  • Napping. Lots and lots of napping.
  • Traffic double-whammy during our Friday evening with the rental car: the fair was still underway near the arch, and a Cardinals game let out just as we were finishing dinner. In the amount of time we spent at a dead stop in front of Hooters, we could have gotten out, ordered and consumed some wings, spoken to the Hooters waitress about The Patriarchy, left a generous tip, and sauntered lazily back to our car.
  • It was hot, but in a good, nostalgic way for us Hawaii and Florida natives.
  • We each finished at least three books. This was a really nice, relaxing trip. :-)
Whew! Thanks again to +Lauren Uyeshiro for never settling for dinner-and-a-movie, and for planning a great anniversary trip while we can still travel easily.

Last but not least, here's a link to the full photo dump from our weekend (mainly of interest to +Ellen Robinson as usual, but others may enjoy).

Baby Sprinkle from the Lady JD-MBA's

A week ago, Carrol and the JD-MBA ladies and JV's threw Cathleen and I a lovely baby sprinkle.  I was spoiled rotten -- they brought the party to our apartment!  Here are a few pics from the event.

Flowers and pinwheels:

We all decorated little onesies and bibs for the babies!  Cathleen's baby's gender is going to be a surprise, so we tried to keep colors and patterns gender-neutral; but it's so hard not to just slide into baby girl territory and put little butterflies all over everything.

Finally, thank you to Carrol and the girls for making this such a special day for me.  I truly felt honored and loved!

Conversation with Another Preggo Today

Walking along State Street in the Gold Coast today, on the way to Walgreens, I passed another preggo lady out for a walk with her friend.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Other Preggo:  I'm sorry, I just have to ask -- how many weeks are you?  I'm at 20 weeks.

Me, really happy to be talking with another preggo: Oh, I'm 20 weeks too.

Then me, looking at her belly: Wow, you're really little!

Then me, again, after a half-second beat of thinking:  Oh no.  I'm huge, aren't I.  I'm huge for 20 weeks.    I'm going to have a giant baby.

Other Preggo:  Well, you've certainly got some pop on you!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

In fact, I am pretty much the same size as Cathleen, my co-honoree at the Lady JD-MBA's Baby Sprinkle party.  But ... Cathleen is 8 months.  I'm only 5.

I've got some pop!

Baby Stuff for Tall People

It turns out that of course there's a website specifically addressing "baby stuff for tall people," at www.tallbabystuff.com.

The big takeaways for me:

  • Don't buy a tall crib because they're all designed to be a the right height to NOT kill your baby if she manages to get out;
  • If you need to buy one thing for a tall papa, invest in a tall changing table -- that's where the back pain comes from;
  • When you're looking at strollers, look not only for a tall handle, but also for wide distance between the back wheels.  Tall parents tend to have longer strides, and so they tend to kick the wheels.
This was really helpful!  All these things that I've never had to think about ...

Star Wars Baby!

For years, Will has said that we will name our child "Obi-Wan Kenobi Vito Corleone Robinson."  He thinks that will deter any tiny playground bullies from messing with our kid.

BUT!  She's a little girl!  So we're naturally changing her name to Obi-Wanda.

Hurray for little Star Wars girls!  Luckily, there's an artist in Hawaii named Mi Cielo who makes THE BEST Star Wars baby clothes (handmade applique):

This pic was taken in a Kailua store (Under a Hula Moon?  Can't remember).  For those of you not lucky enough to be on Kailua Beach, Mi Cielo also has an Etsy store: http://www.etsy.com/shop/micielomicielo

Big (Little) News!

Dear Friends and Family,

Will and I are thrilled to share that the two of us are expecting!  She's going to be a little girl, due mid-November, 2013.

Here she is, nearly 2 (!) months ago.  She's much bigger now!  We don't have a more recent pic, however.

Of course, we are thrilled  :D
